The Blood of Dawnwalker is one of those releases where the review scores and the player mood did not match on day one. Critics were warm, the Steam reviews were not, and almost all of the gap came down to the PC build rather than the game underneath it.

The short verdict

IGN’s Travis Northup scored it a 9 and called it his new favourite vampire game, singling out the day and night cycle and the stress of the limited time. Aggregates settled around 83 on Metacritic from 41 critics and 85 on OpenCritic. On Steam, day-one sentiment sat near 58 percent positive, which lands the game in Mixed and makes the reception a genuine split rather than a flop.

What reviewers agree on

Most positive reviews mention the same three things. The human and vampire builds are genuinely different rather than cosmetic, the world reacts to what you do and what you skip, and the writing around the vampire court is stronger than the premise suggests. Several critics also praised the way the game avoids filler, with almost nothing that exists purely to pad the runtime.

Where the criticism lands

The 30-day clock divides people. Some critics called the time cost of training brilliant because it forces real decisions; others called it an unnecessary tax that punishes curiosity. Combat drew the same split. Its directional parry system rewards matching the angle of an incoming attack, and several reviewers admitted the first few hours were rough before the system clicked.

PC performance workarounds

  1. Switch to fullscreen mode to reduce the launch stutter.
  2. Update the motherboard BIOS to avoid shader-compilation crashes.
  3. Drop controller sensitivity from 1.0 to 0.8 to fix diagonal drift.
  4. Wait for the first patch if 60 fps, HDR and clean cutscenes matter to you.

Cutscenes are locked to 30 fps by design, HDR support is missing, and some players report frame drops in the first village even on very high-end cards. Rebel Wolves has acknowledged the issues publicly and said a patch is in progress.

Who should buy it now

On PS5 or Xbox Series X the experience matches what critics reviewed, so if the time system and the dual-form combat sound appealing, it is a safe pick. On PC, buy it for the writing and the systems, but go in expecting to wait for patches if performance is something you notice.
